Dear < Your MP >,

Re: Trident Replacement

The hugely disappointing vote back on the 14th of March 2007, where parliament saw fit not only to ignore mine, but also a majority of the country’s wishes* - in voting against a postponement of a decision; and more importantly voting for the replacement of Trident and the Vanguard submarines.

The Labour Party ,seem now even more of a "lame duck" obsessed with clinging on to power rather than addressing the real needs of this country, has now committed us to spending up to £76 billion – and yet parliament has yet to review the issue of contracts in 2012, as we are supposedly only entering the "design & concept" stage. Surely a full public consultation and a detailed parliamentary process of review after 2010, would give us accountability and a real decision on the UK´s defence needs?

Now we face the embarrassment of having committed ourselves to a new nuclear weapons system whilst trying to negotiate on the international stage against other countries developing such weapons. We may also face legal challenges regarding a possible breach of the nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty, and being over taken by events at the 2010 international conference on Non Proliferation. We also face the huge expenditure on the "design & concept" stage of a redundant weapons system not equipped for the realities of a modern world.

I call on you to work for a full public consultation on the proposed Trident replacement and also to give your full assistance to the Peacerights legal challenge: http://www.peacerights.org/documents/Joint_Opinion.pdf
